Saving Baby's Privates

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has long advocated for a safe world, free of toxins. As parents, we go for products that are safe for the littlest humans, as many have lifelong problems associated with them. Hormone disruption? Skin depigmentation? Carcinogenic? No thanks!
Lucky for us, EWG does the leg work and offers us a list of baby goods rated for their safety.
Yay! One of our favorite items made their "Best Diaper Cream," Dimpleskins Naturals Bum Bum Balm. This chemical-free cream contains such natural goodies as avocado oil, beeswax, and organic calendula and lavender, and gives a great, soothing scent. This is a top pick for pairing with cloth diapers, if needed.
According to EWG, there are certain ingredients we should avoid. Among the worst:
  • DMDM Hydantoin: this preservative can lead to the formation of formaldehyde, a carcinogen. 66% of kids are exposed to this through wipes, shampoos, and body wash. EWG gives this a 9 on a scale of 1-10, 10 being the worst health hazard.
  • Fragrance: Such a broad ingredient term! These are not only allergens, they contain phthalates, which are endocrine disruptors. And 97% of kids are exposed. EWG gives this an 8.
  • Oxybenzone: this is the active ingredient in most sunscreens, so 49% of children are exposed. Altogether, a recent study showed that 97% of Americans have this in their bodies. It can cause photoallergic reactions and possibly damage cells and affect the hormone system. Another 8 on a scale of 1-10.

Concerned about these ingredients? Check your favorite products through the Environmental Working Group. Baby's body care goods must be safe. Use your buying power to show corporations that you prefer chemical-free!
